Introduction:


Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Digital India’ with the launch of 'Digital India Week' campaign in the national capital, with a view to sensitize people of our country through the Digital India Programme. Digital India is an Umbrella Programme covering many departments. It weaves together a large number of ideas and thoughts into a single, comprehensive vision so that each of them is seen as part of a larger goal.

Being a proponent of technology and digitization, SNDT WU is diligent about the digital literacy and digital empowerment of present and future students. In pursuance of this, the University has created a road map for the digital empowerment of its stakeholders and has completed the following:

  1. Connecting its three campuses viz. Churchgate, Juhu and Pune through a virtual tunnel.
  2. Creating WiFi connectivity on its three campuses - in progress
  3. Intranet Portal using a platform - ‘Susmavad’ - for communication across all the three campuses.

Several student centric applications are being developed and deployed on all three campuses.

The Contest:

SNDTWU is organizing a Debate Competition, to provide the young thinking minds of the university a prodigious opportunity to portray their debating skills.

The competition intends to foster the ability of the student to look at issues that concern her as the citizen of a country with a glorious past which is on the threshold of significant change brought in technology and communication. It also aims to reward young professionals whose contributions and technological ideas will definitely have a positive impact on society in the near future.


Rules and Guidelines of the Debate Competition:

  1. Structure
    • The Competition is divided into Senior and Junior divisions (under graduate, postgraduate).
      Senior division includes participants registered for Masters/Post Graduate programmes and,
      Junior Division includes participants registered for any kind of undergraduate programme.
    • The participants should be registered in any of the above-mentioned courses in India and
      should be a student of SNDT WU
  2. Languages: English, Hindi and Marathi

  3. Topics:
    1. Digital Infrastructure as a Utility to Every Citizen: a boon or curse?
    2. Governance & Services on Demand: a boon or curse?
    3. Will the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Mobile app help transform cities into clean cities?
    4. Internet of things will make life more comfortable?
    5. Is media creating or corrupting generations?
    6. Will IT innovations make life more comfortable?
    7. Should students be allowed to use internet in classrooms?
    8. Should students be allowed to use mobile phones in college?
    9. Can technology replace teachers?
    10. Digital India Campaign of the Government will revolutionize the India nation or be another political gimmick?
  4. Procedure for Debate:
    • Interested participants have to register as a group of two.
    • Colleges/Departments are required to conduct internal competitions at the college level and
      register names of the best team for the University level Competition on

    • The preliminary rounds for the conducted colleges and university departments will be
      conducted on the 8th August 2015
    • The preliminary round for the affiliated colleges will be conducted on 12th August 2015.
    • The Final round among the best 8 teams will be conducted in the Juhu campus on 13th August
      2015.
    • Each team will have two members and will get 2 minutes per participants followed by open
      discussion between the two teams for 5 Minutes.
    • The Debate will be in the turn court format.
    • The Topic will be chosen from the list provided above by lucky draw on the day of the
      competition itself.
    • Teams speaking for and against the motion will be decided by lucky draw on the day of the
      competition.

    • Overall impression
  6. Contest Deadlines:
    • Registration at College/Department level : 02/08/15
    • College/Department Level Competition : 04/08/2015
    • Registration for winners for University Level Preliminary Round: 06/08/2015
    • Preliminary Rounds for University Depts./Conducted Colleges (same day on 3 campuses to select 2 teams from each Campus) : 8/8/2015
    • Preliminary Round for Affiliated Colleges: 12/8/2015
    • Final (8 Teams) : 13/8/2015

The Final day: Saturday, August 15, 2015

The winners of all the contests of Digital India Campaign will be felicitated on Independence Day by the hands of the Chief Guest.
